EN-IoT 2025

2nd Workshop on Energy Neutral and Sustainable IoT Devices and Infrastructure
MON 22-Sep-2025; KU Leuven

Scope and background

There are billions of IoT devices worldwide, and this number is set to skyrocket in the coming years. Among this vast landscape, ultra-constrained devices are becoming a dominant force, shaping the future of IoT. Given their sheer volume and highly specific applications, these devices must be maintenance-free, self-sustained, affordable, autonomous, and seamlessly integrated into their environments. These characteristics define what are often referred to as energy-neutral, zero-energy or ambient IoT devices (as coined by 3GPP). For simplicity, the term energy-neutral device (END) will be used to emphasise their pivotal role in fostering sustainable IoT ecosystems and driving societal progress.

ENDs require ultra-low-power, cost-effective processors and transceivers, paired with energy-harvesting capabilities to eliminate the need for battery replacements or recharging. Moreover, their production, usage, and end-of-life disposal should have minimal environmental impact. Yet, despite their potential, the inherent complexity of ENDs—arising from their unique performance, fabrication and operational constraints—has left them underserved by current IoT connectivity solutions, demanding fresh and innovative approaches.

ENDs are made possible by several key technical enablers. These include advanced energy harvesting and management systems, efficient energy storage solutions (where applicable), sustainable material innovations, cutting-edge backscattering systems, non-RF communication technologies, intelligent duty cycling and wake-up protocols, tiny machine learning (TinyML), and lightweight, energy-aware protocols for sensing, actuation, computation and communication. While some of these advances require significant network infrastructure support, all come with unique challenges and open research questions. The EN-IoT workshop will offer a dive deep into these issues, fostering dialogue and innovation around ENDs that operate sustainably within their environmental contexts.
